How We Pick Your Home’s Design Style

At Decorus Home Staging, we’re known not just for filling a space with what’s on hand — but for curating each home’s design to complement its unique architectural style. Every property has its own personality, and our goal is to highlight its best features through thoughtful, style-appropriate staging.

Here’s a look at how we determine your home’s design style and create a cohesive, elevated look that feels tailor-made.

The Walkthrough: Our Design Discovery Phase

During your initial walkthrough with a Decorus Design Manager, we start by observing the home’s architectural elements — these details often tell us exactly which direction to go stylistically.

First impressions matter. Does the home feature shake siding, shutters, and classic columns that evoke a timeless, traditional feel? Or does it lean more modern, with metal accents, vertical wood slats, and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows?

Identifying whether your home is Traditional or Contemporary is the first step. From there, we refine our direction even further — deciding which specific design style (such as Modern Farmhouse, Transitional, or Mid-Century Contemporary) best aligns with your property’s architecture and market appeal.

Traditional Homes: Character, Detail, and Warmth

Here is a lovely example of a traditional-leaning home. Notice the shutters framing the windows, the columns along the entryway, and the arched doors and paned windows. These are the details that inspire us to design with classic forms, warm tones, and rich layers — staging that feels inviting and timeless.

Contemporary Homes: Clean Lines and Simplicity

In contrast, here’s an example of a contemporary home, commonly seen in Bellevue and Kirkland. These homes showcase sharp, clean lines, black-trimmed floor-to-ceiling windows, and a focus on natural materials like wood, stone, and metal.

With contemporary design, less truly is more. You won’t find ornate millwork or heavy trim here — instead, the architecture itself does the talking. Our staging for these homes emphasizes simplicity, contrast, and modern functionality to mirror that same design philosophy.

Transitional Interior

When we step inside a home, we immediately begin to study its architectural details and interior finishes. Elements like millwork, crown molding, wallpaper, and lighting all tell us something about the home’s personality and design direction.

For instance, when a home features picture-frame molding, board and batten walls, or traditional-style light fixtures, it often falls into what we call a Transitional category. Transitional design beautifully blends the warmth and character of classic architecture with the clean lines and simplicity of modern design.

By identifying these details early on, our design team can curate furnishings and accessories that feel perfectly at home — honoring the property’s craftsmanship while giving it a fresh, updated appeal that today’s buyers love.

Contemporary Interior

When we walk through a contemporary-leaning home, we look for elements that emphasize clean lines, minimalism, and openness. These homes often feature open floor plans designed for effortless flow and a strong connection to the outdoors through expansive floor to ceiling windows and sliding glass doors.

Key materials — such as glass, steel, and exposed wood beams — speak to the contemporary design philosophy of blending natural and industrial textures. The color palette is typically neutral and restrained, allowing architecture and form to take center stage. You may also see abstract wallpapers or sleek, minimal light fixtures that add subtle artistic character without overwhelming the space.

We also pay close attention to vertical slat walls, 3D textured panels, and other geometric design details. Even the tile selection and installation pattern can tell us a lot about a home’s style and era. These small but intentional details guide us as we curate furniture, lighting, and accessories that complement the home’s modern edge while maintaining a warm, livable feel.
